Bear Event Rules - National Plot Hound Association

I. DRAG RACE

A. The Drag Race is divided into two (2) categories: Line and Tree
B. Dogs will be divided into heats, no more than six (6) dogs in each heat.
C. Heat winners will advance to semi-finals and semi-finalists will advance to finals. (Line Winners compete again Line Winners and Tree Winners compete against Tree Winners.)
D. Only the First Place Line and Tree dogs in each heat will advance to semi-finals and finals.
E. Dog that passes through line flag within thirty (30) feet diameter of home tree is awarded first tree.
F. Line flags to be approximately one hundred (100) yards from home tree and approximately 100 feet apart.
G. Dogs will wear colored collars.
H. Dogs will be allowed fifteen (15) minutes from time of release to run, track and cross line. After first dog crosses line, fifteen (15) minutes will be allowed to qualify for tree.
I. Dogs involved in false starting in semi and grand finals will be disqualified.
J. No one is permitted within fifty (50) feet of race course, line flags or home tree except judges, bear handler, and dog handler.

II. BEAR BAY

A. Dogs will not be permitted to make contact with bear.
B. Dogs will be kept on a leash at all times.
C. Dogs compete one at a time.
D. Heats will be one (1) minute duration.
E. Event will be judged by three (3) judges.
F. Winners will be determined by most barks per minute. - TIES will be re-entered and broke.
G. Trophies awarded will be a minimum of three (3) places and a maximum of five (5) places.
H. Dogs waiting to enter will be kept fifty (50) feet from dogs competing at all times.


GENERAL INFORMATION

A. The Bear Event is designed to display the qualities required to successfully catch a bear with hounds. The dog must have tracking ability, speed, treeing ability aggressiveness, agility, courage, stamina and intelligence.

Each event will be judged by no more than three (3) judges.

BEAR CHAMPIONSHIP

A. This event is the means by which Annual NPHA Bear Dog Champions are name. Champions are named in these categories: line, tree, and most aggressive. This event is held in conjunction with the Annual Plott Days event.

NOTE: VARIATIONS TO THE EVENT AT THE VARIOUS SECTIONALS, SUCH AS PACK EVENT, MAY BE HELD IF TIME PERMITS AND THERE SEEMS TO BE ENOUGH INTEREST. ALL ENTRY FEES ARE SET BY HOST CLUB.
